     Both of these phrases are used to ask about the quantity of something. However, we use 'how much' with uncountable nouns. These nouns are always singular and they cannot be counted. 'How many', on the other hand, is when the noun we are talking about is countable and has a plural form.

We mainly use 'how much' with uncountable nouns. These nouns are words that are always singular and they do not have a plural form. example : How much sugar do you need for your tea?

We use 'how many' to show the quantity of a countable noun. These nouns have plural forms. example : 

How many books have you read so far ?
