The finite element method is a numerical method like the finite difference method, but is more general and powerful in its application to real-world problems, which may involve multi-physics and complicated geometry and boundary conditions. In the finite element method, a given domain is viewed as a collection of subdomains, and over each subdomain the governing equation is approximated by any of the traditional variational methods or any method that is suitable. The main reason behind seeking approximate solutions on a collection of subdomains is the fact that it is easier to represent a complicated function as a collection of simple polynomials.
